When it rains, it pours

PHEW. Today has been no good at ALL.

I had to go see my mean dentist again to get a crown and it cost soooooo much money. When the lady at the desk told me how much I owed her (in a very casual way, I might add....she said it like it was 5 bucks or something), my jaw dropped, then I got teary eyed, then I managed to be kinda mean to her for not giving me fair warning when I made the appointment in the first place. Dropping that kinda cash is bad enough, but not expecting it makes it that much bigger of a pill to swallow.

The dentist mentioned something during my procedure about getting a crown on another tooth once this one is out of the way, but he can just forget about that now that I know how much these babies cost. My big silver tooth that shows up in almost every picture that I smile in is just FINE, thank you. And now I have a gold one on the other side to match! As Seth put it - now I just have more bling in my mouth.

After the big gold crown and the even bigger bill for it, I sulked in my cube for awhile but finally started coming around and feeling okay.

Until Seth called and told me that I got something in the mail from Camera Enforcement Something-or-other. CRAP. Apparently, I ran a red light last Tuesday. Great. I don't remember doing it at all, but they have 3 pictures to prove it so I guess I did, and now I have to pay $50 for it. This was the last thing I needed today!

But....as the day goes on I'm starting to regain perspective. There are a lot worse things that could happen, and yes it sucks to have to spend so much money on so many non-fun things, but oh well. What are you gonna do...

Well, actually, I know exactly what I'm going to do: Get in my favorite comfortable old lady nightgown ("The Granny"), get a #6 from Wendy's, tap into this a few times,

...and watch some so-bad-its-good TV.
Cheers to tomorrow being a better day!

Back to work

What a great long weekend.

And what I wouldn't give for every weekend to be 3 days instead of 2....that one extra day really does make a ton of difference. I got so much done! I saw the new Indiana Jones movie (it was high on the to-do list), and it was GREAT! Sure, there were a few things that weren't realistic, but all of the Indiana Jones movies are like that so it was totally fine by me. If you love the old ones, then you'll love this one too. Seth already wants to see it again! I do too, but movie tickets are too pricey...we realized that this was the first movie we'd seen in the theatre together in 2 years! So needless to say, it felt like a big event :)

A few other highlights of the weekend --

I made BBQ tofu for the first time, and it was just okay. I've grilled tofu on the grill pan before and it was delish, but this time it didn't have a whole lot of flavor. I marinated the tofu in BBQ sauce, but I've decided that the sauce was too thick to seep into the tofu enough and that's why it didn't taste like barbeque in the middle. Next time I may find a thinner bbq sauce, or I might just use fake chicken instead. It was kind of fun to make such an all-american kind of meal, though! Except for my "meat"loaf, this is just about as all-american as my cooking gets...bbq, corn, broccoli, and potato salad. Its a good thing I only got a small container of that stuff at Kroger, because I could totally eat a bucket of potato salad and not think twice about it.

I got 2 coats of "maple leaf" paint on the hallway! Now there's only one more pink room left to get rid of. I was so scared that the color would be too loud, but its not at all. There are so many different colored rooms leading into that hall (blue, green, purpley-taupe), and amazingly burnt orange works with all of them. I still need to buy another quart of paint and put one more coat up, then I'll post some pictures.

In the meantime, check out the bedroom curtains that my mom made for us!

This picture doesn't do them justice at all - our bedroom is hard to take pictures in for some reason. But trust me - they are great! This is what the room looked like before, by the way. I still can't get over how great they turned out, and I know she put so much work into them...it just really means a lot that she went to so much trouble and spent so much time on them. She made 6 panels (2 for each window), and she even lined them. Its amazing how much higher the ceilings look with the curtains up, and just how much more dramatic the room feels. It doesn't even seem right to call it a bedroom anymore...its more of a boudoir now :) THANK YOU, MOM!!!

One final thing - we have a new critter! His name is Chunk, and he's a groundhog that lives under our shed. He's really cute and chunky! And hard to get a picture of.

On Wednesday I went to the trial gardens just down the road for my lunch break, and it was amazing. I only got to see about half of what's there during my one hour...that place is huge! And I got lots of ideas of plants that would potentially look good planted around our house. For example - I like the idea of this tree and this plant near each other:

I just love bright spring green coupled with the purplish/red color.

This ones great too...its soft and beachy and it blows a lot in the wind.

I don't have a green thumb at all, and I've never thought twice about plants or landscaping or anything like that. But then when I saw all the different colors, textures, and shapes of all the plants, I was immediately interested and inspired.

How could you not be! I never know what to do on my lunch breaks anyway, so my new plan is to start going to the gardens every day and taking pictures, drawing, and just getting re-energized for the rest of the day.

This is a 3 day weekend for me - YAY! I'm going to try to take advantage of it and get some projects done. I'll probably paint the hallway, and maybe some other smaller projects too.
Hope everyone has a great long weekend!

...with the most adorable little blind baby dog in the world.

She seems pretty happy, even though she can't see anything.

And....she's spent.

Its hard work being so adorable :)

yard work

Seth has been working his butt off in the yard these days....mowing grass, trimming bushes, hacking up old stumps, and pushing/pulling down trees. Don't get the wrong idea - the trees coming down were already dead. Unfortunately they were taken over by some really aggressive vines.

I think it might be English ivy, which is bad stuff (I saw the word "invasion" a lot when researching it). It killed a couple trees in the backyard, so Seth has been out there cutting the trees up and clearing out the vines.

He works harder than anyone I know.

You rock, Seth!

Elvis Costello came back to the beautiful Tennessee Theatre last night and he was amazing...I swear he just keeps getting better and better. Seth and I had 3rd row center seats, and it totally felt like he was signing right to us :) Fun times!

I have to get a stupid root canal tomorrow. Definitely NOT fun times. Hopefully it'll go smoothly and it'll be the first and only one I ever have to get.
